Fortunately, Dirk can’t stay mad at me, which is good because I’m dying to talk to him. And I’m excited because we’re having a peaceful afternoon on the beach. The ocean is beautiful, and we are almost alone except for a pelican diving for fish. We each have a lovely beach chair and a blue umbrella to protect us from the sun.

I hate having to tap dance around specific details—like finding the bookend—so I stick to safe subjects that won’t upset him or get me arrested for trespassing.

“Jason has been harassing Tracy with threatening phone calls,” I tell him. “He’s even told her he thinks I’m involved.”

Dirk stretches out his long body on the chair and closes his eyes. “I wish he’d say that to me. It would be the last thing he’d ever say.”

“I have to admit he scares me.”

Although sitting next to Dirk I don’t feel scared. He’s muscular and strong, and I’m pretty sure he could easily take out Jason in a fight. It’s when I’m by myself that the heebie-jeebies begin.

I realize I also haven’t yet told him about finding Jason’s appointment book and photographing the names and numbers. I can’t figure out a way to sugar coat my snooping, so I say, “Remember the day I was in Berwin’s bedroom? While I was there I happened to find Jason’s appointment book and discovered the name of his potential book buyer. I contacted him, and we met in Harbour Town.”

That’s a very short synopsis, but it covers all the facts. I look over at Dirk, waiting for a reaction. He’s completely still and his eyes are still closed.

“And this potential buyer is?”

He sounds calm enough so I continue. “His name is Oliver Parker-Smythe, and he’s on his boat in Harbour Town. He’s quite a nice guy—very English.” What on earth does “very English” mean? I think I’m babbling. “He was prepared to pay $750,000 for the Poe book.”

Dirk’s eyes are still closed, but his eyebrows fly up. “That’s very interesting.”

“What I can’t figure out is why someone is trying to hurt me? If Jason thinks I have the book, he surely wouldn’t want to hurt me before he finds it. And I can’t help feeling there’s something not right at Annie Lombardi’s house.” I stop talking as I realize I almost told him I’d found the missing bookend, which clearly must prove Annie had been murdered. But why? She seemed like such a harmless, nice person.

Dirk sits up and smiles at me. “Let’s forget all this business for a bit and cool off in the water.”

The water is not a place I enter willingly. Why not? Because I’ve seen with my own eyes sharks swimming close to the shore. But I don’t want to tell Dirk I’m a bit of a sissy, so I follow him to the water’s edge and stand in the surf, actually enjoying the gentle waves lapping around my ankles. This isn’t so bad. And I don’t see any critters with impressive jaws.
