Fortunately, Dirk canât stay mad at me, which is good because Iâm dying to talk to him. And Iâm excited because weâre having a peaceful afternoon on the beach. The ocean is beautiful, and we are almost alone except for a pelican diving for fish. We each have a lovely beach chair and a blue umbrella to protect us from the sun.
I hate having to tap dance around specific detailsâlike finding the bookendâso I stick to safe subjects that wonât upset him or get me arrested for trespassing.
âJason has been harassing Tracy with threatening phone calls,â I tell him. âHeâs even told her he thinks Iâm involved.â
Dirk stretches out his long body on the chair and closes his eyes. âI wish heâd say that to me. It would be the last thing heâd ever say.â
âI have to admit he scares me.â
Although sitting next to Dirk I donât feel scared. Heâs muscular and strong, and Iâm pretty sure he could easily take out Jason in a fight. Itâs when Iâm by myself that the heebie-jeebies begin.
I realize I also havenât yet told him about finding Jasonâs appointment book and photographing the names and numbers. I canât figure out a way to sugar coat my snooping, so I say, âRemember the day I was in Berwinâs bedroom? While I was there I happened to find Jasonâs appointment book and discovered the name of his potential book buyer. I contacted him, and we met in Harbour Town.â
Thatâs a very short synopsis, but it covers all the facts. I look over at Dirk, waiting for a reaction. Heâs completely still and his eyes are still closed.
âAnd this potential buyer is?â
He sounds calm enough so I continue. âHis name is Oliver Parker-Smythe, and heâs on his boat in Harbour Town. Heâs quite a nice guyâvery English.â What on earth does âvery Englishâ mean? I think Iâm babbling. âHe was prepared to pay $750,000 for the Poe book.â
Dirkâs eyes are still closed, but his eyebrows fly up. âThatâs very interesting.â
âWhat I canât figure out is why someone is trying to hurt me? If Jason thinks I have the book, he surely wouldnât want to hurt me before he finds it. And I canât help feeling thereâs something not right at Annie Lombardiâs house.â I stop talking as I realize I almost told him Iâd found the missing bookend, which clearly must prove Annie had been murdered. But why? She seemed like such a harmless, nice person.
Dirk sits up and smiles at me. âLetâs forget all this business for a bit and cool off in the water.â
The water is not a place I enter willingly. Why not? Because Iâve seen with my own eyes sharks swimming close to the shore. But I donât want to tell Dirk Iâm a bit of a sissy, so I follow him to the waterâs edge and stand in the surf, actually enjoying the gentle waves lapping around my ankles. This isnât so bad. And I donât see any critters with impressive jaws.
